Spirit of Iona

Our community retreat experience on the West Coast of Scotland

The wild and ancient Scottish Isle of Iona has for hundreds of years been a place of pilgrimage, reflection, meditation and inner transformation.

Many people feel a deep sense of homecoming and raw magic arriving on the island with its windswept beaches and misty landscape. Join a small group of like-minded souls on Spirit of Iona for a week of spiritual nourishment and discovery.

Over the centuries Iona has been called by different names, ‘the Isle of Dreams’, ‘the Isle of Standing Stones’, and since Christian conversion ‘the Isle of the Holy Spirit’
— Katherine Collis, A History of Iona and Traigh Bhan

Iona is a magical place and Traigh Bhan is a magical house. I especially enjoyed my own meditations in the Sanctuary as well as the walks with the other participants.

Spirit of Iona FAQs

  • This is a group experience with shared meals, group meditation, gardening and other activities. There is also time during the week to enjoy the island by yourself.

    • Our mornings will start with meditations, grounding us in peace and mindfulness. This sets the tone for a day which allows space for personal introspection and communal experiences.

    • In the daytime we will offer group sessions and allow space for personal time for your individual explorations and co-creation with nature. There will be opportunities to engage with the island’s energy through walks, gardening, and beach visits, nurturing a deep bond between you and this sacred land.

    • In the evenings our group will come together to share meals, followed by the opportunity to join sessions which may offer space for discussions, to watch documentaries, or for spiritual practices such as drumming or fire ceremonies to integrate the day's experiences and insights.

  • Yes. Traigh Bhan has a sanctuary on the upper floor with views of the sea and Isle of Mull. You are welcome to meditate by yourself outside of group meditation times.

  • Group meditations and attunements will feature as part of the week.

  • Vegetarian meals are provided so you don't need to bring food with you. However, if you have any dietary requirements please let us know when you book.

  • We are unfortunately unable to provide private rooms. To make use of the small number of bedrooms available, all rooms are shared.

    • Connection with Nature: You will be encouraged to listen deeply to the earth and to engage with its rhythms and wisdom through walking the stunning white beaches of Iona, visiting the sacred sites of the island and tending Traigh Bhan’s beautiful garden.

    • Spiritual Practices: Daily meditations, group sharings, and the unique 'Light of Iona' attunement ceremony offer paths to inner stillness and a deeper understanding of your spiritual journey, as part of communally experienced spirituality.

    • Community Living: Emphasising the Findhorn Foundation’s core practices, the retreat allows you to live consciously in community with others by sharing meals, looking after the house, the gardens and each other and sharing about your experiences.

    • Cultural Immersion: Engaging with the island community through meditation, local events, and exploring sacred sites allows for a rich cultural exchange and a fuller understanding of Iona’s spiritual heritage.

  • We hope you will leave this retreat with

    • Renewed Spiritual Insight:

      • a deeper understanding of your spiritual journey

      • an experience of our core practices that you will be able to integrate into your daily life at home

      • the knowledge that you can always tap back into your experience of love, light and community

    • Enhanced Connection:

      • a closer connection with yourself, nature and the elemental energies of Iona

      • a sense of unity with fellow participants and the island community

    • Personal Growth:

      • a knowing how you can share about your spiritual experiences with others

  • While we will do our best to accommodate your needs, we are restricted in what we can offer due to the remoteness of the location. Our Traigh Bhan retreat house is set in the middle of a field and there are steps and narrow doors in the house itself.

If you would like to contact us about your additional requirements and whether we can accommodate them, please use our booking questions form.
